What reciprocity means

Reciprocity instead of charity

Whoever receives, gives back – to the people, the land, the plants and mushrooms.

Reciprocity means mutuality. Not a donation from top to bottom, but a relationship in balance.

In many Indigenous cultures this is lived practice. Koryak families in Kamchatka still lay down a small gift for the spirits of a place at sacred sites, the Inelwet – a piece of fur, a little fat. It is the gift that keeps the relationship alive. (after Sagalaev, Tomsk Journal of Linguistics and Anthropology, 2022)

The fly agaric itself lives this way: underground it connects as mycorrhiza with the roots of birch, spruce and pine. It gives water and nutrients, the trees give sugar. Reciprocity is its principle of life.

Why we are needed

Ancient knowledge, a new movement

The peoples of Siberia and the far North have preserved the knowledge of the fly agaric over centuries, often under persecution and contempt. Today, millions of people in the USA alone use Amanita muscaria, and a large community is growing in Europe too.

So far, hardly anything from this movement flows back to the communities the knowledge comes from. We want to change that.
